MY MONUMENT TO SUMMER
My monument to summer,
it's eleven meters high.
It's big and broad and powerful.
It towers to the sky.
I carefully constructed it
of gadgets, games, and gear
to grandly stand in tribute to
the greatest time of year.
I started with my bicycle,
my skateboard, and my scooter.
I strapped them to my comic books,
my kite, and my computer.
I welded on my roller skates
and model racing car,
my swing set and my paint set
and my green and red guitar.
I topped it with my sleeping bag,
my tent and my canoe,
a hula hoop, a swimming suit,
a basketball or two.
And finally I finished with
my baseball bat and glove
and all the other summer gear
I absolutely love.
But now I'm at the monument
and all my friends are waiting.
They want me to play basketball.
They want me to go skating.
I'll have to tear it down again.
There's nothing else to do.
And maybe I'll be finished
by the time that summer's through.
